Adam McVay, REI Inventory Analyst, REI Headquarters, Kent, WA
When did you start commuting to work?
About 6 years ago when I was working in the Spokane, WA REI store. I’ve been at REI HQ for just a little over 2 years with more of a commitment to commuting this year than last year.
How far do you bike commute?
52 miles round trip.
What benefits do you get from it?
Exercise, peace and quiet/time to think when solo, time to socialize when in a group, fresh air, sense of accomplishment, sense of doing what’s right for the environment, gas money in my pocket, more energy during the day and bugs in my teeth.
What is the most challenging issue with biking to work?
Lack of time for day to day needs outside of work. Being on the bike 4 hours a day tends to limit how much time you have to devote to other things. I’ve learned to prioritize and plan my days/weekends much better to take advantage of the time I do have.
What kind of bike do you ride and how do you have it set up?
Cannondale R1000. Standard setup…nothing fancy, pretty much factory. Carry a couple of taillights and one front light. No panniers or rack, just a seat bag for keys, badge, phone, tools, etc.
Do you ride in work clothes or do you change at work?
I change at work. We’re lucky to have a locker room for commuters and people that work out at lunch.
How do you take the things you need to have with you at work?
Commuter bag, backpack, seat bag or I’ll bring a bunch of clothes when I do have to drive in.
Do you find riding at night in the winter months a challenge?
It can be. It’s not the cold that bothers me (rarely drops below 40 in Seattle)…I’m more concerned with being visible since about 60% of my ride is in traffic. I’ve used a whole bunch of lights since I have the opportunity to test them for REI.
What kind of weather do you have where you live?
Seattle gets its fair share of gray and rainy days October through March, but the rest of the year the weather is generally very good. I dress accordingly and I’m fine.
What would you say to encourage others to bike to work?
Find a way to bike commute…even if it’s one day a week or if you have to drive part of the way. Riding your bike to work seems to smooth out the day’s rough spots…don’t ask me why, just try it and you’ll see. |
