Most bike lights are manufactured with integrated lamp/reflector combinations that were originally designed for display lights and projector bulbs. For these applications, a reflected beam with very little radiant fill light is best.

However, for biking an a-focal beam pattern with plenty of fill light is best. And here's why: A fairly focused beam pattern is best for punching through the night. However, if all the light is focused, there is too much contrast between the bright light and blackness of the night. So we designed our reflector to cast a small amount of light that is almost 180 degrees wide to give you the sense of having ambient light and allow your eyes to easily adjust from looking at the light to looking around the trail.

Bottom line, you achieve a longer line of site which translates to faster, safer riding.
