Two guys, a garage and a mission
In 1989, two innovative guys were experimenting with underwater lighting systems in a garage in Monterey, California. These guys are dive enthusiasts…and they’re Stanford graduates, need we say more? Looking for a way to express their genius, Michael Topolovac and Barrett Heywood began developing some of the most powerful lights ever used underwater. Michael also has passion for underwater imaging, so why not design underwater video housings, in addition to fantastic lighting? There was no stopping them. They built a vertically integrated manufacturing company that created the most innovative world-class products in underwater video and photo.
From tiny garage to giant cannery
By 1991, the company was shipping underwater video systems worldwide and had expanded into a 16,500 square-foot renovated sardine cannery overlooking Monterey Bay. Now, you may wonder where bike lights fit into this picture.
Perfect location, perfect timing
Circling back to the two guys from Stanford…in 1996, being men in need of challenge, they asked the question “why waste time sleeping when we could be taking this even further?” They found opportunity on the single track of the Laguna Seca hills. With 24-hour racing on the increase, Light & Motion brought their lighting expertise and spirit to the world of cycling.
